Inspiring Synergy Between People And Nature

About Us

Biosystems is the commercial division of Tropical Marine Centre, incorporating the Biofiltration (formerly TMC Commercial) and Biolumen lighting divisions.

Passion, dedication and care, and the desire to constantly improve quality through better husbandry and welfare, have fuelled TMC’s success over more than 50 years. The Biosystems catalogue of commercial filtration and lighting products, many of them developed and used in our own holding facilities, is a manifestation of that proud history, and one of the pillars that support the TMC vision:

“Inspiring Synergy Between People and Nature”.

Driven by this energy, the Biosystems team continues to develop, test, and refine the extensive range of filtration and lighting products that customers across the world have come to depend on.

The water filtration components, complete plug-and-play recirculating filtration systems, and advanced UV-sterilisation solutions we manufacture and supply, are critical components in any advanced life-support system: whether it’s fish farming, shellfish holding and depuration, public aquaria, aquatic retail or research facility systems, our equipment offers a tried and tested solution.

In 2008, recognising the importance of lighting and photoperiodism in productivity and welfare, we were the first company to harness the rapid evolution of new lighting technologies as part of an integrated aquatic life support system. Today, with wider recognition of the vital role light plays in improving productivity and reducing stress, and with an ever-growing demand for improved welfare standards, Biolumen offers a plug-and-play, fully integrated, biologically optimised lighting solution that includes the world’s most advanced photoperiod control platform. From the highly complex photoperiod control required in areas such as research and early-stage aquaculture production, to spectrally tuned lighting and accurate day length and intensity control required in modern agriculture applications, Biolumen offers unrivaled expertise and knowledge, and the products needed to deliver robust, proven solutions.

TMC's vision serves as our guiding light across all aspects of our operations, initiatives, and projects. It propels us forward, shaping our journey, inspiring synergy between people and nature.

We foster a culture rooted in our core values: Animal Welfare, Sustainability, Quality, Passion, and Expertise. These values guide our actions and are reflected in the behaviours of our people, suppliers, and customers. Our strategy, initiatives, projects, and daily practices all align with these fundamental principles.

Competencies

Our Core Values

Animal Welfare

Tropical Marine Centre was born in 1970 and has its roots in sourcing and supplying marine ornamental livestock to pet shops and public aquariums worldwide. Animal welfare is central to everything that we do, investing significant care, time, and resources into every aspect of our work with marine life. Our filtration and lighting systems are designed with the welfare of the animals in mind, providing the best water quality and optimised lighting to support animal wellbeing.

Sustainability

We are deeply committed to ensuring the sustainability of the marine keeping hobby for future generations. Our pioneering efforts in welfare and environmental issues—especially related to the collection and importation of marine livestock—have garnered us a world-renowned reputation. We proudly stand as a centre of excellence and technical expertise within the industry. Additionally, in our daily operations, we actively minimise our carbon footprint and continually explore energy-saving measures across our company sites.

Quality

Our commitment to consistent, high-quality livestock is unwavering. Our short supply chain ensures that we can offer fish and invertebrates of exceptional quality. We're also the UK's leading manufacturer and distributor of innovative commercial filtration and lighting equipment. Our products are designed using only highest quality materials, suitable for operation in harsh marine environments. Our LED lights use the latest diodes, and our lighting controllers with their advanced functionality are trusted around the world in applications ranging from sensitive coral breeding to public aquariums, fish farms, pig and poultry to the leading research and development facilities.

Passion

Passion is what drives us, and it extends to everyone, and everything connected to the industries within which we operate. Our gold standard livestock practices are not only shared among our suppliers and communities but also reach beyond supporting livestock. We have a rich history of partnering in projects such as building schools and community structures worldwide, and supporting various projects around the globe. Additionally, our engagement with local schools and academic groups ensures a continuous pipeline of enthusiastic individuals who share our love and passion, fuelling us to always innovate and push the boundaries.

Expertise

Our global efforts in advising, supporting, participating, and implementing best practice animal welfare standards, along with our technical expertise, are well established. We actively recruit professionals who share our core values, and whose expertise and passion are what makes us who we are. But what truly sets us apart is our unwavering commitment to our vision: Inspiring synergy between People and Nature.
