Seahorses

Enigmatic Creatures of the Reef

Seahorses are among the most captivating and unique inhabitants of the marine world. With their upright posture, prehensile tails, and intricate patterns, they offer a touch of magic to any aquarium. As members of the genus Hippocampus, these fish are renowned for their distinctive appearance and fascinating behaviours.

Captive-Bred Availability

Advancements in aquaculture have made captive-bred seahorses more accessible to hobbyists. Species such as Hippocampus erectus and Hippocampus kuda are commonly available and are better suited for aquarium life than their wild-caught counterparts. These seahorses are typically more resilient and easier to acclimate, reducing the risk of disease and stress.

Specialised Care Requirements

Seahorses have specific care needs that must be met to ensure their well-being. They require a stable environment with low water flow, as they are not strong swimmers. A minimum tank size of 75 litres is recommended, with plenty of live rock for hitching and hiding. Water temperature should be maintained between 24°C and 27°C, and regular water changes are essential to maintain water quality.

Diet and Feeding

Seahorses are carnivorous and feed primarily on live or frozen foods such as mysis shrimp. Due to their slow feeding habits, they should be kept with non-aggressive tankmates that won't outcompete them for food. It's important to provide a varied diet to ensure they receive all necessary nutrients.
