Pygmy Basslets
Small in Size, Big in Personality
Pygmy Basslets are among the most captivating and vibrant fish in the marine aquarium hobby. Despite their diminutive size, they bring a burst of colour and activity to any reef tank. Known for their peaceful nature and striking appearances, these fish are ideal for both novice and experienced aquarists seeking to add a touch of brilliance to their underwater world.
Vibrant Colouration
Pygmy Basslets display a stunning array of colours, from the deep purples of the Orchid Basslet (Pseudochromis fridmani) to the bright yellows of the Forktail Basslet (Assessor flavissimus). Their vivid hues make them a focal point in any aquarium, adding depth and interest to the aquascape.
Peaceful Temperament
Generally, Pygmy Basslets are peaceful and reef-safe, making them suitable for community tanks. They tend to establish small territories among live rock and may exhibit some territorial behaviour towards other bottom-dwelling species. However, they are not aggressive and can coexist harmoniously with a variety of tankmates.
Adaptability and Care
These fish are relatively hardy and adapt well to stable aquarium conditions. They thrive in tanks with plenty of live rock, which provides hiding spots and supplemental nutrition. A minimum tank size of 30 gallons is recommended, with water parameters maintained at a temperature of 72-82°F, a pH of 8.1-8.4, and a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025. Regular water changes and good water movement are essential to mimic their natural environment.
