Hogfish
Hardy, Colourful & Full of Character
Hogfish are among the most striking and resilient fish in the marine aquarium hobby. With their bold colours, inquisitive nature, and adaptability, they offer both beauty and personality to any reef setup. Members of the wrasse family (Labridae), hogfish are known for their active behaviour and unique feeding habits, making them a fascinating addition to larger marine tanks.
Vibrant Appearance
Hogfish display a range of vivid colours and patterns. Many species, such as the Coral Hog (Bodianus axillaris), feature deep pink bodies with yellow fins and a distinctive black spot behind each pectoral fin. These eye-catching markings make them a standout in any aquarium setting.
Adaptable & Hardy
While hogfish require stable water conditions, they are generally hardy and adapt well to captivity. They are less prone to disease compared to some other marine species, making them suitable for intermediate aquarists. However, they do best in well-maintained aquariums with proper filtration and regular water changes.
Feeding & Behaviour
Hogfish are carnivorous and feed on a diet rich in protein. In the wild, they consume small fish, shellfish, and crustaceans. In captivity, they thrive on a varied diet that includes mysis shrimp, chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets. Their active nature and feeding habits make them engaging to observe.
