Description

The Parupeneus indicus, commonly known as the Yellow Spot Goatfish, is a charismatic and active species that brings movement and unique personality to any marine aquarium. Recognised by the distinct yellow spot on its upper flank, this goatfish species is a natural forager, constantly sifting through the substrate in search of food—making it a lively and engaging tank inhabitant.

The Yellow Spot Goatfish is best suited for intermediate aquarists who can provide a spacious, fish-only system with a sandy substrate. This allows the fish to display its natural foraging behaviour using its sensitive barbels, which it uses to detect prey hidden beneath the sand. This behaviour not only adds dynamic energy to the aquarium but also helps keep the substrate aerated and clean.

A carnivorous species, the Yellow Spot Goatfish thrives on a varied diet rich in marine proteins. To ensure optimal health and vibrant colouring, we recommend feeding with Gamma Foods, including Gamma NutraPellets Complete and Gamma Mysis or Brineshrimp, which support robust immunity and natural behaviour.

Visually, this goatfish is elegant yet distinctive, with a cream to pale beige body accented by its namesake yellow flank spot, and subtle horizontal striping. Juveniles may exhibit slightly more contrast, which softens into a more refined adult appearance—making it a graceful and eye-catching addition to your collection.

At Tropical Marine Centre, we work exclusively with trusted supply partners to ensure our Yellow Spot Goatfish arrive healthy, well-acclimated, and ready for life in a marine tank.

While typically peaceful, this species does require ample swimming space, open substrate, and occasional hiding spots to feel secure. It is best kept with other non-aggressive tankmates in a large, open environment where it can move freely and explore.

For hobbyists seeking a hardy, interactive bottom-dweller that brings both aesthetic value and natural utility to the aquarium, the Yellow Spot Goatfish is a top-tier choice.
