Significant news for the reef-keeping community

For the first time in more than a decade, Trachyphyllia geoffroyi and Acanthophyllia deshayesiana from Indonesia are once again being legally imported into the UK.

Following an extensive review, UK authorities and industry bodies — including the Joint Nature Conservation Committee(JNCC), the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra), and the Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association(OATA) — have overturned the negative opinion that had been in place since 2014. This decision recognises the strengthened management, traceability and sustainability measures now operating within Indonesia’s coral export framework.

As a result, the first legally imported Indonesian specimens of these iconic LPS corals in over ten years have now arrived in the UK.

This development represents more than just the return of two highly sought-after species. It demonstrates how science-based regulation, responsible supply chains and international cooperation can enable a sustainable ornamental coral trade that supports reef conservation and coastal livelihoods while providing aquarists with legally sourced specimens.

These corals are fully documented, legally traded and sustainably sourced Indonesian LPS.

Quantities are understandably limited in these initial shipments.

If you have been waiting to see these species return to the UK market, speak with your local aquatic retailer about availability through Tropical Marine Centre.
