Which Reef Flow 2.0 is Right for Your Tank?
Choosing the right model depends on your aquarium size and flow requirements. Use this guide to find your best fit:
- Reef Flow 2.0 1000nano (5V DC / 1,000 l/h / 5W) — Nano and desktop aquariums. Also ideal as a dead-spot eliminator to complement a larger wavemaker in bigger systems.
- Reef Flow 2.0 2000nano (12V DC / 2,000 l/h / 10W) — Nano and desktop aquariums requiring a little more flow, or as a secondary pump to eliminate dead spots in medium to large reef systems.
- Reef Flow 2.0 4000 (12V DC / 4,000 l/h / 16W) — Small to medium reef and freshwater aquariums where a compact, full-featured wavemaker is needed.
- Reef Flow 2.0 8000 (24V DC / 8,000 l/h / 27W) — Medium to large reef systems up to approximately 2,000 litres.
- Reef Flow 2.0 16000 (24V DC / 16,000 l/h / 55W) — Large and demanding reef systems requiring high-volume circulation.
Tip: A good starting rule of thumb for reef tanks is to aim for a total turnover of 20–40× your tank volume per hour. Use two wavemakers positioned opposite each other to create crossflow and eliminate dead spots.
How to Calculate the Right Flow for Your Reef
Reef tanks generally need a total water turnover of 20–40× your tank volume per hour — more for SPS-dominated systems, less for softer LPS and mixed reefs.
Quick example: A 200-litre reef tank needs 4,000–8,000 l/h of total flow. A single Reef Flow 2.0 4000 covers the lower end; add a second for a fuller, more natural wave pattern.
For best results, position two wavemakers on opposite sides of the tank rather than one large unit — this creates crossflow, prevents dead spots behind rockwork, and more closely replicates natural ocean surge. The nano models (1000 and 2000) are ideal for targeting any stubborn dead spots without adding bulk.
