New High-Efficiency Media Reduces Power Demand in Fluid Sand Towers
TMC Ltd has introduced a new high-efficiency biological media for use in its Fluid Sand Towers (FSTs), offering measurable energy savings in aquatic filtration systems. Testing indicates the upgraded media can reduce power consumption by up to 35% compared to traditional filter media, while maintaining stable biological filtration performance.
The media provides a high surface area for biofilm growth and remains fluidised at lower pump speeds and electrical loads. This supports consistent nitrification and reduces the risk of clogging. The material is inert and does not affect water pH.
Installation is compatible with existing TMC FST units through a simple retrofit: replacing the internal ABS dome with an HDPE version and switching out the old to the new media. Lower flow-rate DC pumps are recommended to maximise energy efficiency.
This solution is applicable to recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), public aquaria, and marine research facilities seeking operational cost reductions and lower energy use.
Important: The new media should not be mixed with traditional oolitic sand. When transitioning, users are advised to change one unit at a time and monitor water chemistry to ensure biological stability.
